These apple fritters are so good. I think I could eat them every day. Surprisingly easy to make, you are going to love the crispy fritter filled with an amazing apple filling.

Can You Bake These Apple Fritters?

I do not recommend baking these fritters. While you might want to find a healthier version so that you can avoid the frying, the result is just not the same. The batter is designed to be fried and baking it in the oven will leave you disappointed in the results.

What apples are best for apple fritters?

I am using granny smith when making my fritters. I like granny smith apples because I like the tartness of the apples with the sweetness of the filling and the crispiness of the dough. You want to make sure you are an apple that is good for baking and cooking, even though you are not baking this dessert. Other apples that will work well with this apple fritter recipe are gala apples, Fuji, and honey crisp apple. As long as you are using cooking and baking apples, any type of apple will work well.

What Variations Can I make To Apple Fritters?

You can use the basic recipe of this fritter to change the recipe in a few ways. Adding a variation of topping to these fritter like ice cream, or caramel sauce or even chocolate chips will give you an added treat. Can you reheat an apple fritter?

If you want to reheat these in the oven, you will want to use a 350 degree oven and heat the fritter for about 5 to 6 minutes. I like to add more glaze to the top of the fritter, since it is likely to melt off during the heating process.

Can you Freeze Apple Fritters

The apple fritters will freeze beautifully. However, you want to make sure they are not glazed when you freeze them. The glaze does not freeze very well and will become sticky. It is best to wait to glaze the fritters after you have thawed them.

Are Apple Fritters Vegan

This apple fritter recipe can easily be made into a vegan recipe. The only animal product it has is milk, which can be changed to use a nondairy version like almond milk, soy milk or oat milk.

How to Store These Fritters

You can store these fritters at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Make sure these are stored in an airtight container. They should last about 2 to 3 days when they are stored at room temperature or about 1 week when stored in the refrigerator.

Hi Margafret, yes you can. Line you basket with parchment paper and then brush lightly with oil. Drop about 1/4 cup onto the paper, don’t overcrowd, and then air fry at 400° for about 5-6 minutes on each side. Make sure to lightly spray or brush oil over the tops of each fritter before air frying. We hope you enjoy this recipe.

FAQs

Why are my apple fritters not crispy? ›

Best tips for apple fritters:

Use two spoons to drop the batter into the oil and spread gently. If you drop a scoop of batter into the oil, the outside will be crispy and the center will be raw. To make them really crispy, I prefer to fry them until they are dark brown not just golden brown.

Why did my apple fritters get soggy? ›

If the oil gets too hot, the fritters burn before they cook on the inside. If the oil is too cool, the fritters absorb all the oil and end up soggy. Use a probe thermometer to monitor the temperature while cooking and let the oil heat back up between frying batches of fritters.

Should fritter batter be thick? ›

You want a thick batter for these fritters. If you find it's a little too thin simply add in some more flour. If the batters too thick (can still see flour etc), add a dash of milk. The batter should be thick enough to hold its shape on a tablespoon without pouring off everywhere.

What raising agent is used in fritters? ›

There are a lot of recipes for apple fritters that use baking powder or soda, which is a chemical rising agent, to make the dough rise.

Does baking soda make fritters crispy? ›

Is baking soda or powder best for frying? A pinch of baking soda can help produce crispy fried foods. It reacts with the acid in the batter to create carbon dioxide bubbles. These lead to an airy batter and a crisper, fluffier result.

Why do you put baking powder in fritters? ›

So we use both to get the best of both worlds; Baking soda (bi-carb) OR baking powder – just a touch, to aerate the batter every so slightly (without it, it's slightly denser); Parmesan – for a good hit of savoury flavour AND to make the fritters extra crispy! Green onion and coriander – for a hit of freshness.

Why are apple fritters unhealthy? ›

Apple fritters are among the unhealthiest doughnuts. Just because a doughnut has fruit it it doesn't mean it is a good choice. Apple fritters are deep fried in fat. A medium sized apple fritter contains approximately 17 grams of fat (almost half the fat from saturated fat) and 450 calories.

How do you keep fritters crispy? ›

Keep the food warm in the oven.

If you're not serving fried food immediately, you'll need to keep it warm to prevent it from getting cold and losing crispiness. One way to do this is to place the fried food on a wire rack in the oven at a low temperature, around 200°F to 250°F.

Can you keep fritter batter overnight? ›

You can make the batter up to 1 day ahead of time and store in the fridge. I've used this trick when I'm a bit short on time and know that I'll be needing to rush dinner the following night.

Is pancake batter the same as fritter batter? ›

A fritter batter is a muffin batter without butter (fat). How does pancake batter fit in? Right in the middle of the two because it use 1/2 part fat, but keeps the other core components the same. These all fall under the quick bread family, which use baking powder or soda as a leavener.

What is the purpose of the egg in fritters? ›

Alternatively, don't use them at all. The eggs are there with the flour to bind the fritters together, and to make the fritters rise a little, but they're not absolutely necessary where cheese will melt and act as binding.

Can you shallow fry fritters? ›

While baking the fritters may seem like a more wholesome choice, I encourage you to fry them. Frying ensures you'll get that extra-crispy exterior, which is the sign of a great fritter. Plus, these are shallow-fried, rather than deep-fried, in just a couple of tablespoons of oil.

Adding flour to a wetter batter will give you the thick consistency you want. Add crumbled stock cubes for a flavourful kick! Add as little or as much as you like (or none at all), depending on the flavour you want.

Can you freeze apple fritters? ›

Yes, you can! Make sure to cool the fritters completely before freezing. Fritters can be stored in an air-tight, freezer-safe container for up to three months. When you're ready to reheat your fritters, we recommend you either toast them in a toaster oven or a sauté pan.

Why is my batter not getting crispy? ›

Keep the oil temperature up for crispy fried food

When it comes to battered foods, according to Bon Appétit, the lower the temperature, the longer your batter is sitting in the pot absorbing oil, which can lead to a dark, unappetizing oil-laden crust.

How do you fix soggy fritters? ›

Recipe Notes:

Batter consistency is key to good fritters. If too runny, add a touch of extra flour (otherwise fritters soggy inside). If way too thick, add a touch of water. It does come down to how juicy / how well the water was removed from the zucchinis.

Why are my fritters soft? ›

When frying, work in batches and avoid sticking the fritters too close together in the pan. If they are too close, they'll create steam which will make them too soft. Use hot oil! Don't add the fritters to the pan until the oil is nice and hot.

Why is my batter not crispy? ›

Timing. Bring it to the table immediately. Fried food in batter must be done almost in real time: the closer you get to eating it, the better. This is because the cover given by the batter and the humidity of the food quickly remove the crunchiness.
