Chicken and Drop Dumpling Stew (2024)

I love a good bowl of comfort food. Don’t you? This is adapted from a recipe in an Amish cookbook I have. The rich broth is full of chicken, carrots, celery and easy drop dumplings. This is the first time I’ve made drop dumplings. I usually roll and cut them. We enjoyed this version. I’ll be making it again.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 boxes chicken broth (or 6 cans)
  • 5-6 carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 1 onion, peeled and chopped
  • 3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1/2 tsp. poultry seasoning
  • 3-4 cups cooked chicken, chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk

Bring the broth to a boil in a large pot. Add the vegetables and bring back to a boil.

Mix up the dumplings. Stir the flour, salt, and baking powder together. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender or fork. Stir in the milk to form a stiff dough. Drop by spoonfuls in the boiling chicken broth. Stir in the chicken and reduce the heat. Cover and cook for 20 minutes.

Last week I participated in a Virtual Progressive Thanksgiving Dinner. I wanted to share all the links with you again, in case you missed any. You’ll want to check out the Thanksgiving recipes and also browse around on these blogs. Be warned though – these bloggers have some delicious looking photos and recipes. You’re going to want to cook after looking at it all!

Happy Thanksgiving and happy cooking!

I made your other dumplings previously (the ones you roll out and cut) and they were excellent, but they made my kitchen a mess so I figured I’d try these drop dumplings instead. I don’t know what I did wrong, but the minute I dropped the dumplings into the broth they disintegrated! I double checked the recipe to make sure I followed it correctly and I did, so I’m not sure what the deal is.

I’m guessing this isn’t what they are supposed to be like, so do you have any idea what could have gone wrong? I’m wondering if the recipe calls for too much butter and that’s whey they fell apart? Or maybe it’s the fact that I used margarine instead of real butter?

Also the few dumplings that survived the dropping process were very mushy and tasted like playdough! 🙁 I like a chewy dumpling so this was a big turn off for me!

I did salvage my soup by adding egg noodles and potatoes to make it more filling but I was very disappointed. I guess from now on I’ll stick to the ones you roll out and cut.

Amber, I’m so sorry they didn’t turn out. I wonder if they were too dry? I’m just not sure,, but I’m sorry that it wasn’t good.

How would I adjust this recipe to use the slow cooker? I loved it the first time I made it. I love that no Condensed Soup is necessary. I haven’t figured out how to do the drop dumpling part if I use my slow cooker. Any ideas?

Jill, I don’t know if it would work in the slow cooker because the broth is supposed to be at a boil and you can’t get that in a slow cooker. I wonder if they would cook though, if given enough time. If you try it, let me know!
