Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole Recipe Variations and Substitutions

  • Protein Variations:Replace the chicken and ham with other proteins like turkey, bacon, or sausage.
  • Vegetarian Option:Create a vegetarian version using mushrooms, spinach, or other veggies as the main ingredients.
  • Healthier Soup Option:Opt for low-fat or reduced-sodium soup for a lighter version.
  • Cheese Options:Choose from cheeses such as Gruyère, cheddar, mozzarella, or blue cheese for a unique flavor twist. You can also use dairy-free cheese as a lactose-free alternative.
  • Noodle Variations:Select a pasta type you prefer. Gluten-free pasta is also an option.
  • Topping Ideas:Experiment with different toppings like herb-infused breadcrumbs, crushed crackers, or chopped nuts for added texture and flavor.

Storage Tips

Serve:Serve the casserole immediately. We like to serve it with a nice leafy green salad.

Store:If you have leftovers, let the casserole cool to room temperature before transferring it to an airtight container. Place it in the refrigerator and consume it within 3-4 days.

Freeze:To freeze the casserole, use a freezer-safe container or wrap it tightly in heavy-duty aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Label the container with the date for reference. Store the chicken cordon bleu casserole in the freezer for 2-3 months. Remember that pasta dishes may slightly change texture after thawing and reheating, but the flavor will remain intact.

Thaw:When it’s time to enjoy your frozen casserole, plan for thawing. The safest way is to place it in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours before reheating. This slow thawing method ensures even thawing without compromising the texture or taste.

Reheat:To reheat, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) or use a microwave if you’re in a hurry. If reheating in the oven, cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil to prevent it from drying out. Reheat for about 20-30 minutes or until the center is piping hot. For the microwave, heat individual portions on medium power for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally for even heating.

Easy Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole Recipe FAQs

What is chicken cordon bleu sauce made of?

Our Chicken Cordon Bleu sauce in this casserole recipe is made with cream of chicken soup, sour cream, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, dried thyme leaves, ground black pepper, and salt.

Can you put raw chicken in casserole dish?

While technically, you can put raw chicken in a casserole, it will add more cooking time in the oven, and you can then overcook the rest of the casserole as a result. We prefer to put cooked chicken in our Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole before baking the casserole in the oven.

Should chicken casserole be covered or uncovered?

We do not cover this casserole before baking it. This allows the bread crumb topping to get golden brown and slightly crispy, creating the perfect topping for the creamy casserole layers beneath the topping.

Get Kids Involved

Ages 2-3: Let your kiddo help by putting the ham and chicken pieces in the casserole dish. They can practice counting skills as they count the number of pieces of ham or chicken. This is also an excellent opportunity to teach proper washing and clearing before and after handling food.

Ages 4-5: Ask your child to measure and mix the topping ingredients. This is a simple opportunity to introduce your child to measurements and allow them to practice. They can then have fun by sprinkling the topping over the top of the casserole.

Ages 6-8: Teach your child to layer the ingredients in the casserole dish. As they learn and master the skill of layering, this will be valuable to them as they work on other recipes.

Ages 9-11: Supervise them while they prepare the entire recipe. Remember to have them read it twice before beginning the recipe.

Ages 12+: Let them prepare the entire recipe unsupervised while you do the happy dance in the corner!

Budget Tips

Utilize Leftovers: If you have leftover chicken or ham from another meal, this is a great meal to use them in. Creating two meals from one is one of our favorite ways to save money and budget wisely.
