Easy Baby Yoda Cake Tutorial and Chocolate Cake Recipe (2024)

This easy and delicious Baby Yoda Cake (the Child from the Mandalorian) is the perfect cake for any Star Wars fan. It is also a great cake for Halloween. This recipe consists of a rich, moist chocolate cake covered with vanilla and chocolate flavoured frosting. You can use any sheet cake, as long as it is big enough to fit the included template, and frosting you like. You can even model the face out of fondant, this is just the easiest way to make this.

Halloween is right around the corner and as the second season of the Mandalorian will air on Disney+ the day before, I figured I’d make something easy that was the Mandalorian themed. If you recall last year I made Sorting Hat Cookies (recipe here), but Harry Potter certainly has not aged well in 2020 thanks to the author’s opinion on transgender people. J. K. Rowling does not make any money when you make those cookies, so I guess you can still make those and other Harry Potter themed treats (butterbeer sauce, butterbeer cupcakes, butterbeer ice cream). I will certainly not buy any of her books or merchandise anymore. Let’s hope Star Wars will remain safe, because what would we do this year without Baby Yoda (I know that’s not what he’s officially called, but we all say it).

That being said, a global pandemic where we should all practice social distancing might not be a great time for a sheet cake, but you can freeze leftovers and have Baby Yoda cake until Christmas. That is what I plan to do unless someone wants to drop by for a slice or two that I will place on the ground outside. I originally wanted to make cupcakes but it escalated once I finished this Pinterest drawing tutorial (here) of baby yoda in space (which is for kids, I know) because then it seemed silly to only do the head. I made the easiest version of this cake you can make with an easy homemade chocolate cake (based on this cupcake recipe) that I carved into the Child’s silhouette and covered it in a store-bought cake frosting that was almost like a cream or mousse. I used that frosting because it was about to expire otherwise I would have opted for a Swiss Meringue buttercream (recipe here). Any frosting/buttercream (American buttercream frosting recipe here) you like will do. I coloured the frosting with green and cocoa (to limit the amount of artificial food colouring) and added mocca bean eyes. The fondant ones I made looked like he was wearing Elton John glasses. You can probably do much better than me as I am not that great a cake decorator (link to failed Teddy Bear cake here) but I tried. It is a delicious cake, so I highly recommend making it even if you don’t want to make a Baby Yoda Cake.

So there you have not only a delicous chocolate cake recipe but also instructions and a template for making a cute Baby Yoda Cake. I wanted to make the kind of theme cake anyone could make (including me with my limited artistic talent) and I think it came out quite cute. I will still find joy in this at Christmas. That chocolate cake recipe is really great. I used cupcake jemma’s chocolate cupcake recipe, but reduced the sugar and made it into a cake. It is chocolatey, rich and almost fudgy. As it uses oil instead of butter it retains its freshness longer, but freeze any leftovers for another day or print the template smaller and make a smaller cake. Covid is really putting a damper on a lot of things this year and this might bring some children and adults a little bit of joy for Halloween. I hope you are all fine and have as happy a Halloween as you can. Stay safe and wear a mask!
