Irish Stew Ingredients

Substitution Suggestions:

  • Ground Beef: for a more traditional Irish stew you can use ground lamb or for a lighter version you can use ground turkey.
  • Veggies: To make this recipe even easier you can use a bag of frozen mixed vegetables or peas and carrots.
  • Beer: You can use any beer you normally drink, or Guinness is a popular Irish beer that is widely available. I typically use light beer, if there is any in the house. Or I just use extra beef broth.

How to Make Irish Stew

  1. In a large dutch oven or soup pot, add the ground beef, olive oil, butter, chopped onions, celery, and carrots. Crumble the beef and cook over medium heat until the beef is no longer pink and the veggies are soft and tender, about 10-12 minutes.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until garlic is fragrant.

  1. Sprinkle the flour, thyme, parsley, rosemary, bay leaf, salt and black pepper over the cooked beef and veggies. Stir it together and cook another 1-2 minutes.
  2. Deglaze the pot with the beer and cook for another 2-3 minutes to cook off the alcohol.
  3. Now, stir in the beef broth and bring to low boil. Then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. Lastly, stir in the frozen peas.

Storing Irish Ground Beef Stew

Storing: Store any leftover Irish beef stew in an air tight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Freezing: This stew freezes wonderfully. Place cooled stew in a freezer safe air tight container, label, date and freeze. Stew will last at least 4 months in the freezer. When ready to enjoy, thaw the stew overnight in the fridge.

Reheating: Reheat stew over low heat on the stove or in the microwave until warmed through.
