This report is the 97th in a series that began in 1926 and provides data on persons in state and federal prisons. The report provides counts of prisoners under the jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities in 2022 and includes findings on admissions, releases, and imprisonment rates. The report describes demographic and offense characteristics of state and federal prisoners. It also provides data on prisoners held under military jurisdiction. Findings are based on BJS’s National Prisoner Statistics program.
