I am a huge fan of blue cheese dressing. It’s the one I always keep on hand at home or ask for when I order a salad at a restaurant. I used to make it at home all the time, but for some reason, stopped and started purchasing the cold version I found in the produce section of the supermarket. One day I planned a salad for dinner, reached into the fridge to grab my blue cheese dressing and realized it was empty. I didn’t want to make a trip to the store so I dug through my recipe box until I found my long ago recipe for blue cheese dressing. As soon as I made the first batch I remembered why I used to make this. It is so good! The entire family complimented it. Now I mix up a batch whenever we want a salad. It takes around five minutes to prepare and is naturally gluten-free. Try it for yourself and see if you don’t think it is the best homemade blue cheese dressing recipe ever.
This is such an easy recipe to prepare. You can use light mayonnaise and light sour cream if you prefer, but, if I am going to make this, I usually go for the gusto and make the full flavor version. It’s super rich and creamy. You can adjust the amount of blue cheese in the recipe to suit your individual tastes. Our family happens to like lots of blue cheese, so if you prefer just a hint of blue cheese, use the least amount called for in the recipe.
The Best Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe
A delicious blue cheese dressing from an old family recipe.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup (4 ounces) mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup (4 ounces) sour cream
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon vinegar (if the mixture is not tart enough for your taste, use 2 tablespoons vinegar)
- 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup crumbled blue cheese (adjust this to your personal taste)
Instructions
- Mix mayonnaise and sour cream together until blended. Stir in garlic powder. Add the vinegar; mix well. Stir in blue cheese. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
Tips:Although you can serve this dressing as soon as you make it, allowing it to sit in the fridge for a couple of hours allows the flavors to blend. I like a tart dressing, but if you prefer a sweeter dressing, add a teaspoon of granulated sugar to the ingredients and mix well. To make this more cost-effective, I purchase a large container of blue cheese at Costco and keep it in the fridge until needed. You can substitute apple cider vinegar for the white vinegar, although it will give the dressing a different taste.

Blue cheese dressing was the first and only salad dressing I would eat as a child, but it was always out of a bottle. Your recipe looks so yummy, and I bet tastes much better than the bottled variety, so I will have to try it soon.

I like blue cheese dressing if it isn’t too strong. Making my own would be a great way to somewhat control the taste.

We go through a ton of blue cheese dressing around here because of all the hot wings we like to eat. I think it would be nice to try and make our own with this recipe to keep in stock.
